CHINA – Westfalia Fruit, a leading multinational supplier of avocados and fresh produce, has successfully launched its first shipment of South African avocados to China.
This milestone represents a significant step for both the company and the broader South African avocado industry.
The shipment, which arrived in Shanghai on October 8, 2024, marks the culmination of efforts to secure access to China’s lucrative fresh produce market.
According to a statement from the company, “This achievement strengthens Westfalia Fruit’s presence in one of the world’s largest economies and aligns with its strategy of entering high-potential global markets.”
The successful shipment follows a pivotal phytosanitary agreement signed between South Africa and China in August 2023. This agreement, years in the making, allows South African avocado exporters to tap into the growing demand for premium fruits in China.
The agreement also positions South Africa to diversify its export markets and compete with other international suppliers, particularly those from Latin America.
Derek Donkin, CEO of the South African Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop), expressed optimism about the potential for growth in this new market. “We should see the growth of South African avocados going into China in the coming years,” he said.
South Africa’s proximity to China gives it an edge over other avocado-exporting nations, as shorter transit times help maintain the quality and freshness of the fruit.
With Chinese consumers showing an increasing appetite for nutritious foods, avocados have gained popularity in the country, particularly among the expanding middle class.
Hans Boyum, Commercial Director for Africa at Westfalia Fruit, highlighted the significance of this moment. “As we celebrate our first shipment of Westfalia Fruit avocados to China, we are thrilled to mark this significant milestone for our company and the South African avocado industry. This achievement reinforces our commitment to quality and sustainability,” he said.
China, with its fast-growing demand for healthy and premium produce, offers tremendous opportunities for South African exporters.
By gaining access to this market, Westfalia aims to ensure a steady supply of avocados during crucial periods, further solidifying its position as a global leader in the avocado industry.
In addition to China, Westfalia has made strides in other major markets, such as India and Japan, where recent shipments have tested logistical capabilities and helped build market presence.
While the approval to export avocados to China came late in the 2024 season, industry leaders remain optimistic about future shipments.
“We’re excited about the growth potential,” Donkin remarked. “The South African government will continue discussions on reducing import duties to help establish a stronger foothold in this market.”
Westfalia’s first container of avocados will be showcased at the upcoming China International Import Expo (CIIE) in November, where it is expected to draw significant attention as the first South African avocado import.
