Washington Apple Commission names Michael Schadler as new president

USA – The Washington Apple Commission (WAC) has announced Michael Schadler as its new president, effective September 2024.

Schadler, who has extensive experience in agricultural trade and marketing, will take over from Todd Fryhover, who is retiring after 18 years at the helm.

Schadler comes to the WAC from the Florida Tomato Exchange (FTE), where he served as Executive Vice President.

His responsibilities included representing Florida’s tomato growers and directing international marketing efforts. Schadler’s expertise is expected to benefit Washington’s apple industry significantly.

“Michael’s background with trade associations, international marketing, advocacy, and grower relations make him an ideal fit for this position,” Fryhover stated.

“I have confidence Michael and WAC staff will work seamlessly to represent the Washington apple grower community and take our programs to the next level in these challenging times for Washington State tree fruit.”

Schadler will work closely with the WAC international marketing team to develop strategies for promoting Washington apples in global markets.

He will act as the primary liaison for Washington apple growers, shippers, the WAC Board of Directors, industry organizations, and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.

“Having been away from Washington for more than a decade, I’m excited to be returning and to have the opportunity to work on behalf of the state’s signature crop,” Schadler said.

“I’m looking forward to helping the apple industry manage a very competitive international landscape. There are a lot of headwinds, but the industry is well positioned to continue building on its long-term export success. It will be a privilege to join the Washington Apple Commission this September.”

Schadler graduated from the University of Washington in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in international studies.

His professional background includes directing international marketing programs for the Florida Department of Citrus and serving on various trade committees, such as the USDA Advisory Committee for Trade in Fruits and Vegetables, and the International Fresh Produce Association Government Relations Council.

In his new role, Schadler will oversee WAC’s efforts to strengthen relationships with international partners and expand the global reach of Washington apples.

The Commission’s promotional programs aim to ensure that Washington apples remain a top choice in key markets around the world.

“As we move forward, it’s crucial to build on the strong foundation laid by Todd Fryhover,” Schadler emphasized. “I am committed to working with the WAC team to continue promoting the high quality and unique attributes of Washington apples, ensuring their success in the years to come.”

Schadler’s leadership is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to the Commission’s marketing strategies, ultimately benefiting Washington’s apple growers and the broader agricultural community.
