MOROCCO – Morocco’s imports of US tree nuts have reached USD 137.03 million in 2023, marking a dramatic increase and underscoring the strengthening trade relationship between the two countries.
This significant rise highlights the growing demand for American tree nuts in Morocco and reflects the expanding economic ties between the nations.
According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), this growth reflects an extraordinary 1755% rise in the export value of tree nuts over the past decade.
In 2023, Morocco imported 32,381 tons of various tree nuts, including almonds, cashews, and pistachios, highlighting the increasing demand for these products in the Moroccan market.
The surge in tree nut exports comes after a challenging period for US agricultural trade with Morocco. The value of tree nut exports was considerably lower in previous years, but the recent growth signifies a strong rebound.
This expansion is part of a broader trend of increasing US agricultural exports to Morocco, which hit a record USD 610.17 million in 2023.
The dramatic rise in tree nut exports demonstrates a significant shift in Morocco’s import preferences and highlights the growing importance of these products in the Moroccan market.
The boost in tree nut exports is supported by the free trade agreement (FTA) between the US and Morocco, effective since January 1, 2006.
The agreement has facilitated trade and fostered economic ties between the two nations. Recent discussions between Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour and US Deputy Trade Representative Bryant Trick in Washington, DC, focused on the FTA’s successes and areas for improvement, including addressing non-tariff barriers affecting other agricultural products.
Meanwhile, Morocco’s fresh produce sector is expanding rapidly, with the market expected to grow from USD 4.37 billion in 2024 to USD 5.37 billion by 2029.
The country is a major supplier of fruits and vegetables to the EU, and the rise in tree nut imports reflects Morocco’s increasing appetite for diverse agricultural products.
The Moroccan government has introduced several measures to support the agricultural sector, including investment reforms and sustainable practices.
Additionally, Morocco’s organic farming sector is also growing, with increased exports of organic fruits and vegetables.
