The Little Potato Co. boosts agri-processing in Alberta with USD 39.5M project

CANADA – The Little Potato Company has embarked on a USD39.5 million expansion project in Nisku hamlet, supported by Alberta’s Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program.

The expansion involves the construction of a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to manufacturing ready-to-cook spuds with flavorful spices, allowing for quick roasting, microwaving, or grilling.

This strategic initiative aligns with Alberta’s vision for economic growth and job creation in the agri-processing sector.

Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, RJ Sigurdson, emphasized the program’s role in fostering investment and job creation: “Our government developed Alberta’s Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program with corporations like The Little Potato Company in mind. The program is providing the right conditions for food and ag processors to invest in our province, grow their businesses, and create more jobs for Albertans.”

The tax credit program requires a minimum investment of USD10 million in a value-added agri-processing plant, providing a 12% non-refundable tax credit for eligible capital expenses.

The Little Potato Company, with its commitment to innovation and growth, has received conditional clearance for a tax credit estimated at USD1.3 million, reinforcing its role as a key player in Alberta’s agri-processing landscape.

Angela Santiago, co-founder and CEO of The Little Potato Company, expressed gratitude for the funding, stating, and “The investment elevates our efforts to grow, pack, and bring more convenient, nourishing, and flavorful Little Potatoes to busy families”.

“We share our heartfelt thanks for this funding as we open our new Nisku packaging facility, which allows us to better serve our family farmers, communities, customers, consumers, climate, soil, and water – and all of us.”

The expanded facility, spanning 22,296 square meters, is set to double processing capacity, enabling the production of approximately 56,699 tons of potatoes, up from 29,483 tons at the previous Edmonton location.

This strategic move positions The Little Potato Company to meet the increasing demand for its products.

Alberta, a key player in potato cultivation, saw an uptick in potato farming in 2023, with 32,415 hectares planted, reflecting a growth trend from 29,574 hectares in 2022.

The province’s economy benefits significantly, with potato cultivation contributing more than USD2 billion annually.

Highlighting the international impact of the expansion, up to 70% of the processed potato goods from The Little Potato Company’s Nisku plant are earmarked for the U.S. market, emphasizing the role of Alberta’s agri-processing sector in global supply chains.

The project, subject to regulatory approvals, symbolizes a significant stride in strengthening Alberta’s position as a hub for agri-processing excellence and innovation.

The completion of the expansion is anticipated to contribute not only to the regional economy but also to the broader landscape of agri-processing on a global scale.
