CANADA – A study by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the University of Guelph reveals promising effects of purple potatoes on inflammation and gut health.
The study, led by Research Scientist Dr. Rong Cao, found that purple potatoes contain powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
“Purple potatoes show tremendous potential to become a functional food because of the strong connection between reduced inflammation and prevention of gut-borne diseases,” Dr. Cao stated. This research emphasizes how brightly colored vegetables can significantly enhance health.
The bright hue of purple potatoes comes from anthocyanins, a type of polyphenol. These compounds not only give the potatoes their vivid color but also play a crucial role in reducing inflammation and supporting gut health. “Anthocyanins can help prevent chronic diseases linked to gut health,” Dr. Cao added.
In a lab experiment, researchers examined the effects of purple potato extracts on obese mice. The mice were given a high-fat diet, like typical human diets, to assess how these extracts influenced their health.
The findings were striking purple potatoes helped improve the gut microbiome and reduce inflammation.
“High-fat diets can weaken gut bacteria, increasing the risk of inflammation-related diseases,” the research team noted.
The study showed that purple potato extracts could help maintain a balanced gut environment, vital for preventing chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
The researchers identified a direct link between the polyphenols in purple potatoes and gut health. Endotoxins from harmful bacteria can cause inflammation, but the antioxidants in purple potatoes help mitigate this effect.
The experiments indicated that a minimum of 75 grams of purple potato extract, administered three times a week, was effective in improving gut integrity and boosting immunity.
Moreover, the results suggest that purple potatoes function as prebiotics. Prebiotics encourage the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, essential for a healthy immune system.
“A healthy intestine is critical for defending against harmful bacteria,” the scientists explained. Improved intestinal health leads to better nutrient absorption and overall wellness.
