SCOTLAND – Kelso-based water treatment and disinfection company Scotmas has secured £2.2 million (USD 2.7 million) in funding to support its international expansion and innovation in chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) technology.
This investment, which includes contributions from Scottish Enterprise and the Investment Fund for Scotland, marks a significant milestone for the Scottish Borders business.
Scotmas specializes in developing customized ClO₂ systems designed to integrate seamlessly into existing storage facilities.
These systems are particularly valuable for potato storage, where they help reduce spoilage and improve operational efficiency.
With this funding, Scotmas aims to grow its product offerings and extend its reach into international markets, addressing the increasing global demand for advanced water treatment solutions.
The funding represents more than just a financial boost for Scotmas. CEO Alistair Cameron emphasized the broader implications of the investment:
“As a company deeply rooted in the Scottish Borders, we take great pride in contributing to the local economy by creating high-quality jobs, apprenticeships, and career development opportunities.”
“This investment is not just about the growth of Scotmas; it’s also about fostering economic development in our community and tackling pressing global challenges like water stress and climate change.”
Cameron expressed gratitude for Maven Capital Partners’ support, noting their shared commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Scotmas has earned recognition as a leading provider of ClO₂ technology through years of research and collaboration with academic institutions. Alan Robertson, Partner at Maven, praised the company’s achievements:
“Scotmas has grown to be the best-in-class provider of ClO₂ technology through years of R&D and academic partnerships. Its technology has solved safety and by-product concerns that have historically hampered the adoption of ClO₂ as a disinfectant of drinking and industrial water.”
“We’re delighted to back Alistair and the team at this point in the group’s growth as they serve international markets.”
Nicola Cameron, Scotmas’ Commercial Director, reiterated the company’s dedication to supporting the local community:
“This investment is not only a boost for Scotmas but also for the wider Scottish Borders community. By growing our team and nurturing talent here, we aim to support the region’s economic development while continuing to tackle global challenges like water stress and climate change.”
Achieving B Corp certification
In addition to securing funding, Scotmas has recently achieved B Corporation certification, joining a global network of businesses committed to high standards of social and environmental performance.
Nicola Cameron described this milestone as “a promise to continuously improve and challenge ourselves to do better for the world around us.”
With this financial backing and its new B Corp status, Scotmas is set to expand its impact globally while maintaining its strong roots in the Scottish Borders.
Senior Investment Manager Sarah Newbould from the British Business Bank praised the company’s efforts:
“Scotmas is a shining example of an ambitious Scottish business driving innovation on an international scale.”
“The team’s dedication to sustainability and addressing critical global challenges aligns seamlessly with our mission to support businesses that deliver local economic growth and create jobs in the communities they serve.”
This investment solidifies Scotmas’ position as a leader in sustainable water disinfection technology, ensuring its continued growth and ability to address global needs.
