Product innovation booms in pepper sector; Enza Zaden and Nature Fresh Farms introduce new varieties

GLOBAL – Enza Zaden, a seed company headquartered in the US, has introduced a new pepper variety called Triology, in addition to Canada’s Nature Fresh Farm’s new Sweet S’NAPS variety.

The Triology variety, according to Johan Stassen, Enza Zaden’s product developer for this segment, has a wide range of adaptability and can be used throughout the planting season.

“Triology is a must-have for all open field and net production growers who utilize the Spanish trellising method and are seeking a box-filler with high yield and fruit quality,” says Johan.

The variety offers larger, high-quality blocky fruit with a high pack out percentage throughout a long crop cycle.

Not only does the plant’s substantial leaf cover protect against sunburn, but it is also highly resistant to cracking.

Its coloration is vibrant, whether green or red, making it the ultimate choice for pepper plantings during the main season, according to Enza Zaden.

“In addition to its strong disease resistance against TSWV, PVY, and Pc, this variety is highly reliable,” he added. “This variety is also easy to grow and does not require any special production needs.”

Nature Fresh Farm’s new Sweet S’NAPS variety

Nature Fresh Farms, on the other hand, launched their new pepper variety, Sweet S’NAPS, during the recently held IFPA Global Produce & Floral show in Anaheim.

According to Matt Quiring, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Nature Fresh Farms, the product has been in development for several years.

“We tasted this pepper on a discovery trip to the Netherlands approximately six years ago,” says Matt Quiring.

“Since that time, we have been working collaboratively with the seed provider to refine this variety, enabling us to introduce a market disruptor in this category.”

Sweet S’NAPS, compared to traditional bell or long sweet pepper varieties, offers a much lighter, crispier texture paired with a sweeter, juicier flavor.

According to Quiring, this new pepper variety is expected to have a significant impact because it belongs to a category of peppers that has not seen any innovation for quite some time.

Sweet S’NAPS will be available in five different colors: red, orange, yellow, olive, and brown/purple.

“They will be available in stores in Canada and the US in spring 2024,” he concluded. “From now on, Sweet S’NAPS will be available year-round, cultivated in the facilities of Nature Fresh Farms in Leamington, Ontario.”
