USA – The Northland Potato Growers Association (NPGA) has appointed Gary Shields as its new Executive Director.
Shields, who starts in his new role on July 29th, brings over 30 years of experience in the potato industry. His appointment follows the departure of Donavon Johnson, who led the organization previously.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gary to Northland Potato. His deep knowledge and enthusiasm for the industry make him an ideal choice for leading our organization,” says Casey Hoverson, Chairman of the Board. “We look forward to the fresh perspectives and strategic direction he will bring.”
Shields’ background includes extensive experience in both potato farming and sales, skills he plans to use to support and advance the interests of NPGA members.
“Understanding the needs of our growers, from national to local levels, is crucial. My goal is to address these needs effectively and support their success,” Shields states.
His first official duty will involve a visit to North Carolina to meet with other potato association directors from across the country.
This trip will help him better understand the national landscape and build relationships with peers in the industry.
“I am eager to work closely with the growers and our board to address the association’s needs and plan for future growth,” Shields adds. His commitment to the NPGA aligns with the organization’s mission to promote and support potato growers in Minnesota and North Dakota through advocacy, education, and collaboration.
In the interim period before Shields’ arrival, Jacey Kuersteiner, previously the office and finance manager, has been overseeing the association’s operations.
Kuersteiner, who has been with NPGA for three years, has played a key role in developing strong industry relationships and understanding the potato sector’s dynamics.
Peter Imle, Chairman of the Board, expressed confidence in Kuersteiner’s ability to lead during the transition. “We are grateful for Jacey’s dedication and leadership. With her support, we remain committed to promoting our region’s high-quality potatoes and continuing to excel in our mission,” Imle says.
The Northland Potato Growers Association remains focused on enhancing the economic viability and sustainability of the potato industry in the region.
With Gary Shields stepping into the leadership role, the organization is well-positioned to continue its support for growers and advance its mission in the coming years.
