MOROCCO – In a stunning turn of events, Morocco has emerged as the leading blueberry supplier to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the 2022/23 marketing year, surpassing its previous competitor, South Africa, according to a report from EastFruit.

The remarkable transformation in Morocco’s blueberry export industry has captured the attention of the global fruit market.

Just two years ago, in the 2020/21 marketing year, Morocco shipped a modest 211 tonnes of blueberries to the UAE.

However, the North African nation witnessed an astonishing surge in export volumes, with a staggering 982 tonnes valued at US$6.3 million during the 2022/23 marketing year.

This meteoric rise in blueberry exports has solidified Morocco’s position as a dominant player in the global fruit trade.

The UAE, known for its bustling international trade scene, imports blueberries from a multitude of countries, including South Africa, the Netherlands, Peru, and 22 others in the 2022/23 marketing year.

Not too long ago, the Netherlands, the United States, and Spain were the primary blueberry suppliers to the UAE.

South Africa subsequently took the lead, accounting for more than one-third of total blueberry imports. However, Morocco’s consistent efforts in expanding its market share have reshaped the dynamics of this industry.

Five years ago, Morocco contributed a mere 2.6% of blueberry imports to the UAE. This year, the North African nation’s share surged to an impressive 36% and peaked at an astonishing 80% during the months of February to May.

Morocco primarily exports blueberries to the UAE from January to June, while South African blueberries dominate the market from July to December.

The two countries have opted for collaboration over direct competition, ensuring a year-round supply of blueberries to meet the UAE’s growing demand.

One pivotal factor driving Morocco’s success is the influx of foreign investments into the country’s burgeoning berry industry.

This support has allowed Morocco to emerge as a major exporter of blueberries, pitting it against traditional competitors such as Spain, France, and Italy in the lucrative European Union market.

Morocco’s rapid ascent in the global blueberry market reflects not only its commitment to quality but also its ability to adapt to shifting trade dynamics.

As the UAE continues to serve as a vital hub for international trade, Morocco’s newfound prominence as the top blueberry exporter underscores its resilience and growing influence in the world of fruit exports.

Morocco’s remarkable journey from a minor player to the top blueberry exporter to the UAE in just a span of two years showcases the nation’s determination and adaptability in the face of evolving market conditions.

With its sights set on the EU market, Morocco’s expanding berry industry is a testament to the power of strategic investments and collaboration in the global fruit trade.
