Maersk’s eco-friendly flagship, Ane Maersk, makes historic arrival in Dubai

UAE – Maersk, a global leader in shipping, marked a significant milestone with the maiden call of Ane Maersk, its first large vessel capable of running on green methanol, at DP World in Jebel Ali, Dubai.

Christopher Cook, Managing Director of Maersk UAE, Oman, and Qatar emphasized the importance of this moment: “It is truly a great moment to witness the arrival of Ane Maersk at DP World, Jebel Ali. This is an important milestone for Maersk in our journey to decarbonize ocean transportation. Ane Maersk represents our ambitions towards sustainability and innovation.”

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaborative nature of the green transition.

“We are proud to welcome Ane Maersk to Jebel Ali, whose arrival highlights the green shift underway in our industry. It is a flagship for sustainability that mirrors our own carbon reduction ambitions at DP World,” he stated.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art dual-fuel engine capable of running on green methanol, Ane Maersk is the first of 18 large vessels ordered by Maersk, set to join the fleet between 2024 and 2025.

These vessels feature an industry-first innovative design, optimizing cargo capacity and reducing consumption per container.

Towards clean shipping

In a parallel development, Hapag-Lloyd and IKEA Supply Chain Operations have joined forces to promote clean shipping. With Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green 100 biofuel option, derived from waste- and residue-based sources, the partners aim to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from container shipments originating in Asia.

Danny Smolders, Managing Director of Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals: “By joining forces, we are reducing CO2e emissions significantly. Ship Green is an important aspect of our decarbonization journey.”

IKEA’s ambitious targets include a 70% reduction in relative GHG emissions from product transportation by 2030 and the exclusive use of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles and ocean vessels by 2040.

Dariusz Mroczek, Category Area Transport Manager at IKEA Supply Chain Operations, stressed the need for continued collaboration towards zero-emission fuels and technologies.

Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green product empowers customers to make environmentally conscious choices, offering options for varying degrees of CO2 emission avoidance.
