Klaver Flowers achieves FSI compliance strengthening commitment to sustainability

ETHIOPIA- Klaver Flowers has marked a major milestone in responsible business practices by beginning 2025 as a fully Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI)-compliant company.

This accomplishment underscores its dedication to sustainable cultivation, environmental stewardship, and fair working conditions.

In Ethiopia, Klaver Flowers’ farm in Wondo Tika renewed its MPS-ABC certification and achieved the EHPEA Code of Practice Silver, which aligns with Global GAP standards. These certifications affirm the company’s commitment to maintaining rigorous environmental and social benchmarks.

Danny Koppes, Operations Director of Klaver Flowers, emphasized the company’s dedication to making a positive impact. “This step shows that we want to make a difference,” Koppes stated. “Responsible production is not only beneficial for our customers but also for our employees, the environment, and the communities we work in.”

Although Klaver Flowers’ operations in Ethiopia and the Netherlands function as separate legal entities, the company ensures both locations adhere to the same high standards.

While the Ethiopian farms specialize in Gypsophila and Limonium, the Dutch facilities focus on premium lilies like Lilium ‘Calvados’ from Heerhugowaard.

This consistency in quality and sustainability across continents demonstrates Klaver Flowers’ global commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility. Customers and partners can rely on the company’s adherence to best practices in flower cultivation.

“These certifications demonstrate that we want to make a difference,” said Danny Koppes, Operations Director of Klaver Flowers. “Responsible production is not only beneficial for our customers but also for our employees, the environment, and the communities we work in.”

The certifications cover all operations, ensuring that lilies cultivated in Heerhugowaard, Netherlands, and flowers such as Gypsophila and Limonium grown in Ethiopia meet identical, rigorous standards.

For over 50 years, Klaver Flowers has been a leader in the floriculture sector. Known for premium lilies like Lilium ‘Calvados’ and vibrant summer flowers such as Limonium and Gypsophila, the company has built its reputation on innovation and consistent quality.

With year-round availability and stringent quality control, Klaver Flowers remains a reliable partner for global flower suppliers.

Ethiopia’s floriculture industry has become a cornerstone of the global flower trade. Currently the second-largest flower exporter in Africa, Ethiopia ranks among the top four globally.

Its growth is attributed to favorable conditions, including a supportive climate, government incentives, and proximity to key markets like the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The industry is a significant economic driver, accounting for about 80% of Ethiopia’s horticulture earnings. In 2021-2022, the country exported flowers worth USD 541 million.

Additionally, the sector has provided substantial employment opportunities, with women holding approximately 80% of the jobs.

Despite its successes, Ethiopia’s floriculture industry faces sustainability challenges related to environmental impact and social issues.

Companies like Klaver Flowers are working to address these concerns by implementing responsible practices and obtaining internationally recognized certifications.
