Kenyan social enterprise unveils innovative mango-based products

KENYA – Tosheka Products (TP), a social enterprise based in Kenya, has developed a patented method to use the entire mango for creating a range of plant-based vegan foods and health products.

This novel approach promises to transform the Alternative Protein (AP) industry and address global nutritional needs.

Herman Muli Bigham, Director of Tosheka Products announced the groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming the mango industry in Kenya.

“We’ve researched and confirmed the viability of using the entire mango to create a series of vegan food and health products. Our method not only offers a new source of protein but also has the potential to reshape the industry,” he stated.

TP’s innovation centers around a unique method for producing super-nutritious foods and health products from mangoes.

This includes dietary supplements, energy bars, flours, and meat substitutes. The mango, known for its rich fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein content, serves as a cost-effective source of alternative protein, containing approximately 10-13% protein.

“Our goal is to fully utilize the mango’s potential, turning what is typically considered waste into valuable, nutritious products,” Bigham explained.

Expanding revenue streams

The company’s method creates five major revenue streams: alternative protein, mango oil, fertilizer material, shell fiber for briquettes, and various health and environmental benefits.

This comprehensive use of mangoes could provide a significant economic boost while addressing environmental issues. TP has already made strides in this direction, processing over 10,000 mangoes in the initial weeks of the project and establishing an efficient collection system.

The mango waste recycling process is straightforward and does not require heavy machinery. TP operates from its Malivani Shamba location, where mango seeds, pulp, and skins are cleaned, dried, and ground into powder.

This powder will be used to develop a variety of products, including those for weight loss, detoxification, and various food and drink recipes.

Bigham notes, “We are excited to introduce our products to both local and international markets, ensuring that the mango’s nutritional benefits reach a broad audience.”

Seeking Partnerships and Support

TP is actively seeking product development partners, investors, distributors, and buyers for its mango-based products.

The company aims to collaborate with local manufacturers for research and development, production, and packaging. Additionally, TP is in discussions with major global companies in health, food, and personal care industries to showcase its patented process.

The company’s mission also includes licensing its patented technology to other mango producers, providing an additional revenue stream and expanding the impact of its innovative approach.

TP is currently identifying local businesses and food security organizations to support local and refugee populations through the distribution of its products.

Initial product priorities include mango flour, energy powders, cereals, vitamins, and energy bars. Future products will encompass items such as toothpaste, weight loss aids, skin and hair care products, digestion aids, and immune boosters.

With over 40 viable products, TP is set to introduce “Mango Passion” as a delicacy in the global market.

TP invites investors to support its mission, which promises not only a return on investment but also significant brand recognition and growth potential.

In Kenya, mango farmers experience substantial post-harvest losses, with an estimated 40-45% of their crop going to waste according to the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI).

TP aims to address these issues by utilizing mangoes that would otherwise be discarded, thereby reducing waste and supporting local farmers.

The investment will aid in establishing a sustainable, drought-resistant industry that benefits local communities by creating employment opportunities and utilizing mangoes that would otherwise go to waste.
