KENYA – Kikwetu Flowers, a prominent Kenyan flower farm known for its premium roses, has embraced a unique commitment to sustainability and community welfare that extends beyond its primary business.
Established in 2019 in the fertile Timau region of Meru County, Kikwetu Flowers grows over 40 varieties of premium roses and has made a name in the market for its quality and creativity.
Yet, Kikwetu’s vision isn’t limited to growing roses; the farm is actively involved in enhancing environmental practices and supporting the local community.
To reduce its environmental footprint, Kikwetu Flowers has invested heavily in solar energy. Rows of solar panels, carefully installed around the farm and atop its water reservoir, provide 60-80% of its energy needs.
“Solar energy not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability, but it also significantly reduces operational costs,” said Mathia Yinda, an executive director at Kikwetu.
Solar energy has allowed the farm to become more self-reliant and environmentally friendly, helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions and providing a reliable energy source that requires minimal maintenance.
Kikwetu Flowers incorporates an eco-friendly approach to waste management by composting flower waste to produce vermi-tea, a nutrient-rich fertilizer derived from worm castings.
This natural compost boosts the health and vitality of the roses while introducing beneficial microbes that aid in disease resistance. Vermi-tea provides essential nutrients directly absorbed by the plants, promoting robust growth and enhancing yields.
In addition to its environmental benefits, vermi-tea helps reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, creating a healthier growing environment. “Our aim is to cultivate roses that are not only beautiful but grown in a way that respects and nurtures the land,” Mathia explained, underscoring the farm’s dedication to organic and sustainable practices.
Water scarcity is a significant concern in the agricultural industry, and Kikwetu Flowers has taken proactive steps to conserve and manage water efficiently.
The farm collects rainwater from rooftops and greenhouses, storing it in a massive 70,000-cubic-meter reservoir capable of sustaining the farm’s operations for up to six months. This reservoir also serves the local community, providing water for household needs.
“Our commitment to the community extends beyond flowers,” Mathia noted. “Water from our reservoir has become a vital resource for the surrounding families.”
As part of its sustainability initiatives, Kikwetu has switched to recyclable plastic sleeves for flower packaging, reducing waste and appealing to environmentally conscious consumers.
These recyclable sleeves, made from eco-friendly materials, minimize the environmental impact associated with traditional packaging.
As more consumers prioritize eco-friendly products, Kikwetu’s packaging choices have positioned it as a socially responsible brand.
Kikwetu Flowers also addresses local infrastructure needs by maintaining roads leading to the village, especially during the rainy seasons when the dirt roads become difficult to navigate.
This initiative benefits not only the farm’s logistics but also the local residents who depend on these roads for daily commuting and transport.
Kikwetu’s sustainability and community-focused approach is part of a broader trend among Kenyan flower farms as they navigate challenges in the global market.
During a recent visit to Kenya, Royal FloraHolland auctioneer Erik Wassenaar observed the seasonal fluctuations in flower demand in Europe and highlighted how Kenyan farms are integral to meeting these demands.
“Each farm has its own microclimate and production rhythm,” Wassenaar noted, acknowledging the role Kenyan farms play in the European flower auction market.
As Kikwetu Flowers continues to grow its premium rose varieties, its dedication to sustainable practices and community development has set a new standard in Kenya’s flower industry.
The farm’s efforts not only contribute to the local economy but also foster an environmentally conscious approach that resonates with consumers worldwide.
