Jordan Valley Authority signs agreement to boost date industry

JORDAN – The Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) and the Dates Cooperative Agricultural Society (DCAS) have signed an agreement to establish new facilities for sorting, packing, and refrigeration in the dates industry.

The initiative aims to support farmers and enhance Jordan’s growing reputation for high-quality date production.

Hisham Hisa, Secretary General of the JVA, emphasized the authority’s commitment to stimulating investment in the Jordan Valley and empowering cooperative societies.

“The Jordan Valley Authority seeks to support leading cooperative societies, especially in the palm sector, which is witnessing significant expansion,” Hisa stated, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Hisa reiterated that the JVA is prepared to provide extensive support to farmers, including improving irrigation services and employing technology to maximize agricultural efficiency.

“The authority is ready to provide any requirements for the palm agricultural sector, from training farmers on irrigation management to employing technology in this sector for optimal use,” he said.

Raed Saaida, Chairman of the Board of Directors at DCAS, highlighted the developmental impact of the agreement, noting its role in strengthening Jordan’s position in the global dates market.

“This agreement highlights the authority’s developmental role in serving farmers,” Saaida said. He added that the project would create over 80 jobs and facilitate the establishment of a research station focused on the palm sector.

Saaida praised the JVA’s continued efforts to monitor water resources and address the needs of palm farmers, which are essential for maintaining and expanding the sector.

Agriculture Minister Khalid Hneifat reported a steady rise in date exports, with cumulative exports reaching 16,280 tonnes in 2024—a 7% increase from 2023.

Jordan’s dates, particularly Medjool dates, have earned a reputation for quality and are exported to countries worldwide.

Major players in the industry, such as Al Katar Dates and Palma Jo, contribute significantly to this global presence.

Al Katar Dates focuses on Medjool production and exports to markets like Italy and the UAE, while Palma Jo operates in the Jordan Valley, offering a variety of date products throughout the year.
