KENYA – Greenspoon | B Corp, Kenya’s leading online organic produce retailer, has proudly launched its latest sustainability report  marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Unveiled during the B Lab Africa Social Connect event at the Greenspoon | B Corp warehouse on 22nd March, the event gathered Kenya’s certified B Corp businesses, all committed to integrating people, planet, and profit into their operations, demonstrating a collective dedication to the triple bottom line.

Based on the report, Greenspoon achieved notable milestones throughout 2023, reflecting its commitment to sustainability.

Significant milestones

The company slashed waste by an impressive 60%, implementing recycling and upcycling measures for various materials, including glass, polystyrene, and plastic, while also reducing electronic waste to zero.

Moreover, Greenspoon optimized its logistics, minimizing petrol, LPG, and diesel usage, particularly during power outages.

On the digital front, Greenspoon showcased its commitment to sustainability by ensuring that approximately 25% of its monthly social media content focused on eco-friendly practices.

Innovative strategies were employed to reduce environmental impact further. The use of gel packs for orders was reduced by over 80%, replaced with reusable ice blocks.

Although Woolcool, a sustainable packaging alternative, showed promise, its economic feasibility remains a challenge for Greenspoon.

In addition to environmental efforts, Greenspoon actively contributed to societal welfare. The company provided meals for 3,806 homeless individuals in Nairobi during the festive season and participated in tree-planting initiatives, collaborating with organizations like ManyMangoes and Eburru Rafiki.

Furthermore, Greenspoon, in partnership with Mark Hyman, MD, raised over USD 11,000 for the Little Lions in Kibera.

The company’s growth was remarkable, with a 96% increase in 2023, reflecting both successes and challenges. Greenspoon emphasized sustainability as an ongoing journey, acknowledging areas for improvement.

Sustainability initiatives

The report underscored the critical role of food systems in shaping health and environmental outcomes. Greenspoon criticized existing food systems for neglecting consumer health and contributing to climate change, highlighting the need for systemic change.

Greenspoon outlined various sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction measures, expansion of e-bike fleets, and partnerships with local businesses to promote sustainable practices.

Despite its accomplishments, Greenspoon recognized areas for enhancement, such as increasing reporting frequency, addressing the shortcomings of the Food Awareness Campaign, and overcoming obstacles in transitioning to solar power and measuring supply chain emissions.

Juliet Kennedy, Founder & CMO of Greenspoon Kenya, emphasized the transformative potential of food, stressing its impact on health, quality of life, and environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead to 2024, Greenspoon outlined ambitious goals, including increasing understanding of supply chain impact, achieving B Corp certification with a score of 100+, transitioning to solar power, expanding its customer base, enhancing employee satisfaction, and partnering with more regenerative suppliers.

Through its sustained commitment to sustainability, Greenspoon continues to pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and socially responsible future. Visit greenspoon.co.ke for the report.
