MEXICO – GLC Cerritos LLC, a leading grower-shipper of avocados in Jalisco, has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability journey by appointing Armando Garcia as Director of Sustainability.
This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to advancing its environmental and social responsibility initiatives.
In his role, Garcia will evaluate GLC Cerritos’ existing sustainability initiatives and chart a course for future projects.
His appointment comes at a time when the company seeks to reinforce its position as an industry leader in sustainable agriculture.
Commenting on his new role, Garcia expressed enthusiasm: “Cerritos has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to sustainability, setting it apart within the Mexican avocado sector. I am thrilled to lead efforts in strengthening Cerritos’ sustainability program.”
Garcia brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having served as Managing Director of the Jalisco Avocado Growers and Exporters Association (APEAJAL).
During his tenure, he spearheaded various sustainability projects in collaboration with organizations such as the Rainforest Alliance and the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization.
“Cerritos is renowned for its sustainability efforts, aligning with its mission to inspire agribusiness with sustainability,” Garcia remarked, citing initiatives like the responsible recruiting program with Stronger Together.
The company’s 3,000 acres of avocado farms are currently certified by Global G.A.P. and Rainforest Alliance, with plans underway to secure Fair Trade certification for the upcoming avocado season.
Owner Saul Medina emphasized Garcia’s role in assessing and enhancing existing sustainability projects, covering areas such as governance, human rights, labor, and environmental standards.
Garcia will craft a comprehensive sustainability strategy to guide the company’s future endeavors in this realm.
Giovanni Cavaletto, US division president, welcomed Garcia to the team, highlighting the positive impact he is expected to bring: “Mr. Garcia’s addition to our team is instrumental in shaping our sustainability strategies and amplifying our message within the industry.”
GLC Cerritos has garnered recognition for its sustainability efforts, receiving the Sustainable Grower of the Year award from APEAJAL.
With a state-of-the-art packing facility in Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, the company exports avocados globally while upholding stringent sustainability standards.
