GHANA – The recently concluded 12th Annual Ghana Garden and Flower Show highlighted a strong commitment to sustainability and climate action under the theme “GREENOVATION: Green the Nation, Feed the Nation, Grow the Nation.”

Held at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra from September 22 to September 29, 2024, the event gathered industry leaders, environmental advocates, and gardening enthusiasts to discuss innovative solutions for pressing environmental issues.

The Ghana Garden and Flower Show serves as a vital platform for promoting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in Ghana.

Dr. Angela Asare from Stratcomm Africa remarked that the show is “not just an event but a movement that embodies responsible practices in business.” This focus underscores the importance of integrating ESG values into everyday operations and community life.

Socially, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show fosters community engagement and empowerment. It acts as a hub for knowledge exchange, enabling farmers and entrepreneurs to learn best practices in sustainable agriculture.

Participants learned modern farming techniques that can lead to increased productivity and economic growth.

The Ghana Garden and Flower Show plays an important role in the fight against climate change by raising awareness about the critical function of plants in sequestering carbon dioxide.

Environmentalist Ama Abena stated, “Every tree we plant helps combat climate change and protect our environment,” emphasizing the need for increased tree planting and biodiversity conservation efforts.

The event’s initiatives included promoting sustainable practices, reducing single-use plastics, and encouraging recycling. By advocating for these measures, the show reinforces its commitment to creating a circular economy that minimizes waste and conserves resources.

Beyond environmental concerns, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show is a powerful engine for job creation. The horticulture and floriculture sectors offer significant employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women.

Participant Elizabeth Afriyie explained, “This event not only showcases our products but also opens doors to new markets, which is essential for our growth.”

The show equips participants with skills needed in the green economy, providing training that empowers them to excel in these fields.

By connecting entrepreneurs with potential investors and partners, the event strengthens the ecosystem for sustainable business growth.

Future potential of the floriculture sector

While the flower industry in Ghana remains underdeveloped, it holds significant growth potential. The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is working to strengthen the industry by providing training in modern propagation techniques like tissue culture.

Currently generating around USD 2.5 million annually, the industry has the potential to reach USD 120 million with the right investments and support.

Notably, this year, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show coincided with Flormart Green Italy 2024, underscoring a global commitment to sustainable horticulture.

The 73rd edition of Flormart drew over 120 exhibitors from around the world, showcasing groundbreaking innovations and fostering discussions on sustainable practices.

This parallel event emphasized the growing momentum towards a greener future, as industry leaders across continents unite to tackle environmental challenges and enhance the role of horticulture in sustainability.
