ETHIOPIA – The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) and TradeMark Africa have received a USD 151,000 grant to introduce an advanced e-learning and knowledge management system in Ethiopia’s horticulture sector.
This landmark project, funded by the European Union (EU) through the Agence Française de Développement (AfD), was formalized with the signing of an agreement at Skylight Hotel.
The initiative is designed to provide comprehensive e-learning resources tailored to the evolving needs of Ethiopia’s horticulture industry.
The project aims to equip individuals and businesses with modern tools to increase productivity and improve market competitiveness. This move is a significant step for the EHPEA, which has been committed to building the capacity of commercial farms through its accredited TVET Center.
During the signing ceremony, stakeholders emphasized the importance of collaboration to fully realize the potential of these new systems.
“Industry players, including growers, exporters, and logistics providers, must embrace digital transformation and invest in technology infrastructure and capacity building,” stated an EHPEA representative.
The project is part of the larger Djibouti-Ethiopia Corridor programme titled ‘Promoting Regional Economic Integration in the Horn of Africa.’
This initiative aims to foster regional economic ties and develop critical infrastructure, with the new e-learning system being a pivotal component.
The introduction of advanced technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and cloud computing, will revolutionize how Ethiopian farmers manage their crops.
These tools will facilitate enhanced production processes, better resource management, and improved market access. Real-time data from IoT sensors will enable farmers to make informed decisions that boost yields and minimize environmental impacts.
“The use of cutting-edge technology will not only increase efficiency but also ensure that our farmers are well-equipped to meet global standards,” said TradeMark Africa’s representative at the event.
As the new systems are implemented, EHPEA members will have continuous access to vital training and resources. This will help them stay up to date with industry trends and regulatory changes, further solidifying Ethiopia’s position in the global horticulture market.
“This digital transformation is set to significantly elevate Ethiopia’s standing in the global horticulture market, building on its existing growth and economic contributions,” noted an EU official.
