Egypt’s agriculture ministry launches strategic plan to strengthen seed industry

EGYPT – Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture has announced a strategic plan to boost the nation’s seed industry, emphasizing the importance of food security and agricultural development.

The initiative, spearheaded by Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk, aims to modernize seed production and enhance private sector involvement.

In a recent meeting, Minister Farouk engaged with Hisham El-Hosary, head of the agriculture and irrigation committee in the House of Representatives, along with key seed industry experts and private sector representatives.

The discussion focused on aligning Egypt’s seed industry with modern technologies and global practices.

“We are committed to improving the investment climate and removing obstacles for investors,” said Farouk, highlighting the government’s dedication to supporting private sector contributions in agriculture.

The Minister underscored the importance of scientific research and modern technology in producing high-quality seeds that are resilient to salinity, climate change, and water scarcity.

He pointed out that Egypt could leverage its research stations and farms to test and apply new techniques in seed production.

Supporting local seed production

During the meeting, El-Hosary reiterated the House of Representatives’ support for the Ministry’s efforts. He emphasized the significance of encouraging local seed production, particularly for strategic crops and vegetables.

“Our goal is to reduce the import bill and save foreign currency by promoting local seed production,” he stated. El-Hosary assured that the House would assist in eliminating any barriers hindering progress in this sector.

Minister Farouk also stressed the need for increased awareness and agricultural extension services. These efforts will educate farmers on the benefits of high-quality seeds and guide them on obtaining seeds from reliable sources.

The Ministry plans to offer technical support to farmers while imposing strict penalties on those who engage in fraudulent seed trading.

Addressing industry challenges

The meeting allowed seed industry experts to share their insights and challenges with the Minister. Farouk acknowledged these concerns and confirmed the Ministry’s commitment to addressing them.

“We are ready to update relevant legislation in coordination with the agriculture and irrigation committee to resolve issues in this vital industry,” Farouk assured.

Key officials, including Magdy Abdullah, Head of the Authorities Sector and Affairs of the Minister’s Office, and Ahmed Odaam, Head of the Agricultural Services and Monitoring Sector, attended the meeting.

Their presence signified the government’s concerted effort to ensure that Egypt’s seed industry evolves in a manner that secures the nation’s food future.

The Ministry’s initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing Egypt’s agricultural output and ensuring food security for its population.

By fostering collaboration between the government and private sector, Egypt aims to strengthen its seed industry and build a more resilient agricultural sector.
