EGYPT – Egypt continues to strengthen its position as a leading exporter of citrus fruits, achieving a record 2.3 million tons in exports during the 2023/2024 marketing year.

The impressive figure marks a 21% increase compared to the previous season, according to data from the General Authority for the Control of Exports and Imports (GOEIC).

Oranges played a key role in this milestone, accounting for 81% of the total shipments, or 1.93 million tons. The country’s orange production saw a significant boost, with production rising by 25% compared to the 2022/2023 season.

Export revenues followed suit, climbing 22% to reach USD 1.1 billion. This marks the first time Egypt has surpassed 2 million tons in citrus exports, establishing a new record for the industry.

“We were able to achieve this record volume thanks to a massive increase in production and the steady increase in global demand,” said Eslam Gelila, CEO of Gelila, one of Egypt’s leading citrus exporters.

Egypt’s citrus exports continue to find eager markets around the globe, with notable increases in demand from key destinations.

The top three buyers of Egyptian citrus—Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands—collectively increased their purchases by 23%, accounting for 760,000 tons of fruit.

European markets also showed significant growth in citrus imports. France increased its imports by 86%, followed by the United Kingdom with a 76% rise, Ireland with 37%, and Spain with 17%.

The variety most in demand continues to be the popular “Valencia” and “Navel” oranges, prized for their flavor and high export quality.

Egyptian citrus growers have also embraced sustainable farming methods, particularly Integrated Pest Management (IPM), to control pests and diseases.

This helps maintain the high quality of the citrus fruit while ensuring environmentally friendly practices that align with global sustainability standards.

The total area planted with oranges in Egypt is approximately 172,200 hectares, with about 75% of this located in reclaimed desert land. These areas benefit from intensive agricultural practices, further boosting yields and improving the overall quality of fruit.

As Egypt’s citrus industry continues to expand, projections for the 2023/2024 season estimate production will reach 3.7 million metric tons.

With a 25% increase in export volumes, Egyptian citrus remains a significant player in the global market, particularly in Europe, Russia, and the Middle East.
