KENYA – The Netherlands is set to deepen its relationship with Kenya during a state visit by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima from March 18 to 20, 2025.
Hosted at the invitation of President William Ruto, the visit will highlight the countries’ strong partnership and shared objectives.
“This first state visit to Kenya is a reaffirmation of the good relations and solid cooperation between our two countries. The Netherlands seeks to engage in new partnerships in various areas and to deepen the countries’ existing ties. Kenya plays an increasingly influential role in the global arena,” reads an official statement.
The two nations collaborate closely in areas such as democracy, the rule of law, peace and security, climate change, and food security.
Focus on Economic Missions
The state visit will coincide with two economic missions concentrating on sustainable agriculture and water management.
These initiatives will bring Dutch and Kenyan stakeholders together to explore innovative approaches to pressing challenges, including food security and climate resilience.
Led by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aid Reinette Klever, the missions aim to open new avenues for business and investment.
The involvement of Ingrid Thijssen, chair of VNO-NCW, as the business mission leader underscores the significance of the collaboration.
The missions, which will take place in Nairobi, are coordinated by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Dutch embassy in Nairobi, among others.
The registration deadline for the missions has been extended to January 28, 2025, offering interested participants more time to join.
Companies keen to contribute to Kenya’s social challenges—such as improving soil health, ensuring sustainable water use, and building resilience in agriculture—are encouraged to participate.
Kenya: A strategic partner
Kenya’s position as a key logistics hub and its annual economic growth of 5% make it an attractive destination for Dutch enterprises.
The country’s open economy and the 2023 trade agreement with the European Union further enhance trade opportunities.
The Netherlands is Kenya’s third-largest trading partner, primarily through imports of Kenyan agricultural and horticultural products.
Moreover, the Netherlands ranks as Kenya’s fifth-largest investment partner, supported by a reputation for providing sustainable and innovative solutions.
Opportunities for Dutch companies
Kenyan companies and the government are actively seeking partnerships to address pressing issues. These include food security, sustainable agricultural practices, and effective water management.
Public-private partnerships play a central role in these efforts, offering promising opportunities for Dutch enterprises.
The Dutch embassy’s active support for businesses underscores the mutual commitment to fostering economic and social progress.
The economic missions are expected to provide participants with valuable insights into the Kenyan market and facilitate meaningful collaborations.
