DP World modernizes Europe’s trade with enhanced rail, barge transport

EUROPE – DP World is making significant strides in modernizing Europe’s trade infrastructure by enhancing rail and barge transport to create more resilient and sustainable supply chains, reduce transportation costs, and minimize environmental impact.

DP World operates 20 terminals in 12 European countries, with rail or barge services available at approximately 95% of these locations.

This extensive network underscores the company’s commitment to providing sustainable transport solutions across the continent.

By modernizing ports and improving critical infrastructure, DP World collaborates with governments and industry partners to tackle rising consumer demand and transportation challenges.

“To power a strong global recovery and ensure a trading landscape fit for the future, we must collaborate with governments and industry partners,” said a DP World spokesperson.

“This collaboration is key to building resilient and sustainable global supply chains that benefit communities worldwide.”

Sustainable solutions in Benelux and UK

DP World Antwerp, one of the greenest multipurpose terminals globally, exemplifies the company’s sustainability efforts. The terminal handles up to 40 trains weekly, connecting directly to major European industrial regions.

Additionally, 35% of cargo at Antwerp Gateway is transported by barge, leveraging Belgium’s extensive waterway network.

Nearby Rotterdam World Gateway also emphasizes sustainability, with 65% of containers continuing their journey via inland shipping and trains. This reduces environmental impact and showcases DP World’s commitment to eco-friendly logistics.

In the UK, DP World’s London Gateway and Southampton terminals have significantly reduced road congestion and carbon emissions by utilizing on-site rail connections.

These ports are the only ones in the country capable of handling 775-meter-long freight trains, equivalent to over 76 trucks. At Southampton, 30% of cargo is transported by rail, the highest rate in the UK.

Expanding barge use on the Danube

DP World is maximizing barge use on the River Danube, a vital trading route that passes through numerous European countries.

Barges on the Danube can transport goods from southwest Germany through Serbia to Constanta, Romania, where the river meets the Black Sea.

This strategic route connects Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, enhancing trade links and reducing transportation costs.

“Using the Danube as a trading route offers a cost-effective and sustainable solution for transporting goods across Europe,” noted a DP World representative. “This approach not only saves fuel but also minimizes environmental impact.”

Boosting Intermodal Connections in Eastern Europe

Constanta, Romania’s premier port on the Black Sea, demonstrates DP World’s focus on intermodal connections.

The terminal transports about 30% of cargo by rail, avoiding bottlenecks and ensuring reliability. It features a three-line rail terminal capable of handling three complete 30-wagon trains simultaneously, with onward services to Bulgaria, Georgia, and Moldova.

In Turkey, DP World Yarimca benefits from an international railway line providing direct access to CIS countries and China.

This enhances the port’s strategic importance and supports the growing demand for express delivery driven by consumer expectations for time, efficiency, and sustainability.

Embracing Green Transport Initiatives

DP World’s Modal Shift Programme at the Southampton terminal encourages cargo owners to choose rail freight, promoting more sustainable supply chains.

Since September 2023, this initiative has saved approximately 4,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to 13,500 lorry journeys.

“Our Modal Shift Programme is a testament to our commitment to sustainability,” said John Trenchard, Vice President Commercial & Supply Chain, UK.

“By choosing rail over road, our customers and supply chain partners are significantly reducing their carbon footprint.”
