MEXICO – Avocado growers in Jalisco, Mexico are gearing up for a promising season amidst challenges posed by drought.

Despite expectations of smaller fruit, the region anticipates a 10-20% increase in production for 2024.

Eleazar Oceguera Aguayo, president of APEAJAL, acknowledged the delayed start to the season due to ongoing drought conditions.

“We are adapting to the drought responsibly, rationing water, and implementing strategies to reduce consumption,” Aguayo affirmed.

Recent rains have provided a temporary reprieve, enabling growers to conserve water crucial for sustaining avocado growth through the dry spell.

Aguayo outlined ambitious export targets, with 130,000 tons destined for the United States and an additional 70,000 tons earmarked for Japan, Canada, and the European Union.

“Jalisco currently exports to 30 destinations,” Aguayo noted, emphasizing ongoing efforts to secure certifications and expand market access, including prospective openings in China, Chile, and South Korea.

With 35,000 hectares currently under avocado cultivation, Jalisco plans to incorporate an additional 3 to 4 thousand hectares this year.

Aguayo stressed environmental stewardship, affirming, “We aim to reach 50,000 hectares while ensuring minimal environmental impact.” Careful management practices are in place to safeguard local ecosystems amid rapid agricultural expansion.

The upcoming 4th of July holiday in the United States typically drives high avocado demand, yet the delayed season may impact export volumes for this period.

Aguayo remains optimistic, projecting a ramp-up in exports within the coming weeks as fruit matures on the trees. Despite disruptions caused by avocado inspections in Michoacán, Jalisco remains resilient, ensuring a steady avocado supply year-round.

Looking ahead, the Global Avocado Summit scheduled for November 21 in Chile underscores Jalisco’s proactive engagement in the global avocado market.

Organized by the Chilean Avocado Committee and the Yentzen Group, this summit promises to facilitate international collaboration and industry insights crucial for sustained growth.
