SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa’s avocado industry is gearing up for an intensive week of knowledge-sharing and innovation as Allesbeste Boerdery prepares to host its annual symposium, showcasing cutting-edge developments in avocado cultivation.
Allesbeste Boerdery, renowned for its pioneering role in avocado breeding, is set to host the annual Allesbeste Symposium from August 5 to 9, 2024.
This event promises a comprehensive exploration into the intricacies of avocado production, genetic development, and market expansion.
International experts, including Mary Lu Arpaia from the University of California Riverside, will join industry professionals from Israel and India to delve into Allesbeste’s latest advancements.
Zander Ernst, Director of Marketing and Production at Allesbeste, emphasizes the symposium’s role in fostering dialogue amid global market shifts post-Covid.
“Our aim is to provide a platform for discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the avocado industry today,” Ernst states. Highlighting the resilience of the Maluma cultivar amidst challenging conditions, Ernst notes significant yield successes despite seasonal pressures.
In recent years, South Africa has witnessed a surge in avocado market accessibility, particularly in India, Japan, and China.
Jeevan Kulkarni of Nutree Farm in Maharashtra State underscores India’s potential as a burgeoning avocado producer and consumer market. “India and China possess ample land and capacity to emerge as global avocado giants,” Kulkarni observes, highlighting the region’s shift from traditional crops like coffee and tea.
Ernst echoes this sentiment, pointing out the strategic significance of these markets. “While India offers lucrative pricing opportunities for avocados, challenges such as import duties and market volatility necessitate careful consideration,” Ernst advises.
Discussions at the symposium will address logistical nuances, including optimal shipping protocols to ensure fruit quality and market competitiveness.
A pivotal highlight of this year’s symposium is the anticipated commercial launch of the Luna cultivar, marking a significant milestone in avocado innovation.
Mary Lu Arpaia, a leading researcher at UCR, will provide insights into Luna’s unique attributes, including its B-type flowers and cross-pollination benefits.
“Luna represents the first of several new cultivars set to revolutionize the industry,” Ernst explains, underscoring Allesbeste’s commitment to advancing avocado genetics.
Beyond genetic advancements, Allesbeste explores cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing avocado cultivation efficiency.
Collaborations with Israeli tech firm BloomX on biomimicking pollination technology illustrate their pioneering spirit in agricultural innovation.
“Artificial pollination has shown promising results, particularly in optimizing fruit set during challenging environmental conditions,” Ernst remarks, highlighting ongoing trials and their potential impact on crop yield.
