QATAR – Qatar’s agricultural landscape received a significant boost with the recent official opening of Agrico’s new urban farm at Qatar Foundation’s Green Island.

This innovative project aims to inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders and promote sustainable farming practices across the region.

The launch event, celebrated on social media by Agrico’s managing director, Nasser Ahmed al-Khalaf, marks a pivotal collaboration between Agrico and Qatar Foundation (QF).

Al-Khalaf expressed gratitude to key figures in QF, including Ouassim Alami and Nawal al-Sulaiti, for their instrumental roles in bringing the vision of Green Island to life.

Our goal is to inspire and enlighten students and young people—the true future of our country. With their creativity and innovation, they can evolve local agricultural technologies and develop solutions that benefit both Qatar and humanity,” al-Khalaf stated.

Green Island serves as a multisectoral learning hub designed to offer experiential education to the community.

It invites collaboration with individuals and organizations passionate about sustainability, providing a platform for innovative ideas and practices in environmental stewardship.

A central focus of the urban farm initiative is community education. Schools are encouraged to participate in organized field trips, where students can engage in hands-on learning about recycling and sustainable practices.

The initiative aligns with QF’s commitment to fostering environmental leadership among young people.

Agrico’s urban farm joins other local organizations at Green Island, including the Arab Engineering Bureau, Milaha, QatarEnergy, and the Seashore Group.

Notably, Al-Awalia (Qatar Primary Materials Company) will lead workshops on upcycling, transforming demolition materials into artistic creations, further emphasizing the importance of sustainability.

This urban farm complements Agrico’s existing operations, which deliver fresh produce and seafood to over 1,400 outlets across Qatar from its main farm located 58 kilometers from Doha.

By employing advanced technology and local expertise, Agrico achieves year-round production while minimizing water and electricity consumption.

The company also provides turnkey and customized farming solutions for aspiring farmers, promoting agricultural innovation throughout the region.

The establishment of this urban farm at Green Island is a promising step towards a more sustainable future in Qatar’s agricultural sector, fostering a culture of innovation and environmental responsibility among the country’s youth.
