NIGERIA – The Federal government of Nigeria has inaugurated the executive committee of the National Ginger Association of Nigeria (NGAN) that will spearhead the operations of the sector and come up with ambitious targets that would enable the country to become the leading exporter of the product.

NGAN is an agricultural commodity association that develops and promotes standards for ginger production throughout the states of Nigeria.

It functions at various levels to continually ensure that all Nigerian ginger meets international market standards.

“In 2019 Nigeria exports of ginger amounted to US$10.4million, which is by no means insignificant in a market of close to US$3billion.”

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment – Dr. Nasir Gwarzo

According to reports by Guardian Nigeria, the country earned US$10.4 million from the exportation of the commodity in 2019.

Though it is the largest producer of ginger in Africa and the 4th largest in the world with a total global share of 14 percent, Nigeria has yet to fully seize the global ginger market valued at US$3 billion due to its inability to export value-added products.

To this end Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, Dr. Nasir Gwarzo, has urged farmers to redouble their efforts in production.

“In 2019 Nigeria exports of ginger amounted to US$10.4million, which is by no means insignificant in a market of close to US$3billion.

“There is therefore evident space for the country to increase its exports by scaling up production so that farmers can tap into the US$3billion global ginger market,” said Gwarzo

He also indicated that use of low-quality seeds and lack of technology hinders the progress of the sector.

He however tasked the association to tap into the N75 billion (US$197m) small and medium enterprise fund available at the Bank of Industry to develop the value chain.

The global ginger market is expected to reach US$4. 8 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 5.4%.
